April 1 is known as April Fool's Day or in most English speaking countries. The custom is believed to have started in France when the Gregorian calendar was adopted by King Charles IX in 1582. In this calendar the new year started on January 1. People who did not use the new date but still celebrated on April 1st became known as fools.
